Intent
Curriculum Aims and Purpose of study
Stondon Lower School has chosen to use KAPOW Religion and World View scheme of work which aligns to the Locally Agreed Syllabus as the primary basis for their World Views curriculum. The scheme of work aims to cover 3 elements: making sense of beliefs and ideas, understanding the impact of beliefs and ideas and making connections.
The scheme asserts the importance and value of Religion and World Views for all pupils, with ongoing benefits for an open, articulate and understanding society. The following purpose statements underpin the syllabus, which is constructed to support pupils and teachers in fulfilling them:
-
Responding to life's 'big questions'
-
Understanding key religious concepts
-
Building substantive knowledge
-
Developing disciplinary skills
-
Contributing to informed discussions
-
Exploring diversity
Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews (R&W) scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to become curious, reflective and open-minded thinkers. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to ask meaningful questions, explore a range of beliefs and worldviews and reflect on their own values and those of others.
The scheme aims to raise awareness of how religion and worldviews influence individual lives, communities and cultures over time. Its goal is to encourage pupils to become respectful and thoughtful citizens who can engage with diversity and contribute positively to a pluralistic society.
The scheme supports teachers in developing their subject knowledge and confidence, enabling them to deliver engaging and inclusive lessons. The curriculum is designed to be both accessible and ambitious, ensuring that all pupils participate fully and achieve their potential.
Worldviews in RE: This syllabus reflects the recent developments in the subject, using the term ‘religion and worldviews’ to describe both religious and non-religious perspectives on human life.
Multi-disciplinary RE: The syllabus also clarifies and highlights the use of different disciplines in the subject, including religious studies, textual study, theology, philosophy and ethics and a range of social scientific disciplines such as sociology of religion and psychology of religion.
Lived religion and worldviews: The syllabus also focuses on the ‘here and now’ of religious and nonreligious worldviews, exploring with pupils many ways in which varied contexts in the modern world, interpretations of sacred writings and tradition, and the influences of worldviews on lived experience for us all.
National Curriculum
The design scheme of work fulfils the statutory requirements outlined in the Locally Agreed Syllabus for Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire. It also reflects the principles outlined in National Curriculum 2014 that ‘Every state-funded school must offer a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based, and which:
-
Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils.
-
Prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
The curriculum reflects current thinking in World Views education by drawing on insights from curriculum research, cognitive science and developments in subject-specific pedagogy.
The curriculum includes; clear progression of knowledge and skills, thoughtfully sequenced learning and purposeful contexts for making. This enables pupils to build secure, connected knowledge and develop an authentic understanding of religions and different world views.
The three strands
The R&W curriculum is organised under the following three key strands:
-
Substantive knowledge.
-
Disciplinary knowledge.
-
Personal knowledge.
Kapow Primary’s R&W curriculum has been planned with these strands running through each unit, ensuring balanced coverage of the different aspects of R&W and opportunities to develop both substantive and disciplinary understanding, alongside personal reflection.
At Stondon, we also have a community connection to All Saints Church, Stondon. Reverend Jenna Dearden supports our community events and leads assemblies at significant times of the year, like Harvest and Advent at Christmas.
